Top Film & Television Apps on Android in South Africa Q3 2021

The third quarter of 2021 saw notable trends in the performance of the top Film & Television apps on the Android platform in South Africa. Data from Sensor Tower highlights the weekly downloads and active users for Showmax 1.0, Netflix, DStv, Viu: Dramas, TV Shows & Movies, and MyDStv SA.

Showmax 1.0 experienced a consistent increase in downloads, starting at around 32K weekly downloads and peaking at 53K by the end of September. The app's active users fluctuated slightly but ended on a positive note, rising from approximately 501K to 516K.

Netflix showed a steady increase in weekly downloads, starting from 25K and reaching as high as 43K by the end of Q3. The active user base also saw growth, climbing from 941K to nearly 990K.

DStv demonstrated a stable performance in downloads, with numbers ranging between 22K and 33K throughout the quarter. The active users remained relatively consistent, with a slight increase from 471K to 480K.

Viu: Dramas, TV Shows & Movies saw a gradual increase in downloads, starting at 21K and ending at 31K by the end of September. The active users for the app also showed positive growth, rising from 324K to 351K.

Lastly, MyDStv SA had more modest download numbers, with a range between 13K and 20K. The active user statistics showed some fluctuations but ended with a slight increase from 51K to 52K.
